When You Feel Unworthy of God

Jun 5, 2026    Nathan Finsel

Series 3: When Faith Feels Fragile — Episode 5 of 6

Recognizing Unworthiness

Pastor Nathan listed several sources of unworthiness feelings:

- Past mistakes we can't forget

- Words spoken over us

- Religious environments emphasizing shame

- Comparison to others

- Seasons of feeling like we failed God

- Believing God's love is conditional like human love

Which of these resonates most with your own experience? Why?

Have you ever rehearsed a "speech" to God like the prodigal son did? What were you planning to say? What stopped you or what happened when you did?

Unworthiness is rarely about God - it's about the stories we've been told or tell ourselves.

What stories have you been telling yourself about your worth?

Understanding Grace vs. Shame

what is the difference between shame and conviction? Can you share an example from your life where you experienced one or the other? How did you know which it was?

"If God isn't condemning you, why are you condemning yourself?" This is a powerful question. How would you answer it for yourself?

The father in the prodigal son story didn't let his son finish his unworthiness speech. What does this tell us about how God views our perceived disqualifications?

Moving Toward Healing (15-20 minutes)

Pastor Nathan offered five ways to loosen unworthiness's grip:

- Stop rehearsing old stories

- Let grace be bigger than mistakes

- Surround yourself with life-speaking people

- Practice receiving without earning

- Remember worth is given, not achieved

Which of these feels most challenging for you personally? Which feels most needed?

"Sometimes the hardest part of faith isn't believing in God. It's believing that God believes in you." Do you agree? Why or why not?

This Week's Challenge:

Choose ONE of the following to practice this week:

- Option 1: Rewrite Your Story

Write down one "old story" you keep rehearsing about your unworthiness

Below it, write what God's Word says about you instead (use Romans 8:1, Luke 15, or Ephesians 2:8-9)

Read God's version out loud each morning

- Option 2: Practice Receiving

Intentionally let someone help you or bless you this week without trying to "pay them back"

Notice how it feels to receive without earning

Thank God for loving you the same way

- Option 3: Speak Life

Identify one person in your life who might be struggling with unworthiness

Send them an encouraging text or note reminding them of their worth

Pray for them daily this week

- Option 4: Grace Meditation

Spend 10 minutes each day this week sitting quietly and repeating: "There is no condemnation for those in Christ. I am in Christ." Let this truth sink deeper than your feelings
